“Sanskrit is the soul of Indian culture. Our Culture resides in Sanskrit. If you want to know our culture you have to know and understand Sanskrit,” said Dr. Ravindra Muley, former director of Centre for Advanced Studies in Sanskrit, Savitribai Phule Pune University. He was addressing as a chief guest of the function on Saturday in the Sanskrit Day celebration organized by Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai in collaboration with Rtaayana.

He stated that “scriptures of all the knowledge systems of India are written originally in Sanskrit. Not only Vedas, Upanishads or Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedangas, Upaveda, Ayurveda, Vastushastra, Arthashastra, Astronomy, Mathematics, Natyashastra, Kamshastra etc. and these writings shows how rich is India’s knowledge base.”

Dr Shakuntala Gawde (Head, Department of Sanskrit) welcomed all and presented report of various activities conducted by Department last year. She informed about the addition of new courses- Diploma in Bhagavadgita, Masters Courses in Yogashastra, Arthashastra, Epics-Puranas and Classical Sanskrit literature. “All these courses are being launched simultaneously from next year,” said Dr. Gawde. Dr. Madhavi Narsalay introduced the chief guest Prof. Ravindra Muley and Dr. Suchitra Tajane proposed vote of Thanks.

Sanskrit day was the concluding ceremony of Sanskrit Saptaha celebration which was continued for week. Dr. Abhiraj Rajendra Mishra, Padmashri and Rashtrapati award winner spoke on recent trends in Modern Sanskrit Literature. Dr Brajkishor Swain, former retired professor of Jagannath Sanskrit University spoke on social significance of samskaras.  Prof. Girish Nath Jha, Chairman of the Commission for Scientific and Technical Commission under the Ministry of Education, Government of India and Professor, School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies at JNU talked on new methods of research in Sanskrit computational linguistics and Artificial Intelligence. Ms. Shruti Kanitkar explicated journey of her composition ‘Srimaticaritram’.

Top rankers of all the courses were felicitated in this function. An alumna of the Department, Ms. Shruti Kanitkar was felicitated for winning Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2022 for her composition ‘Srimaticaritram’. Students presented cultural activities and programme ended with Sanskrit Pasayadan.

संस्कृत दिन 2022

“संस्कृत भाषा हा भारतीय संस्कृतीचा आत्मा आहे. आपली संस्कृती  जाणून घेण्यासाठी संस्कृतचे ज्ञान असणे गरजेचे आहे.” या शब्दांत डॉ. रवीन्द्र मुळे (माजी अध्यक्ष, संस्कृत प्रगत अध्ययन केंद्र, सावित्रीबाई फुले पुणे विद्यापीठ) यांनी संस्कृतचे महत्त्व अधोरेखित केले. संस्कृतविभाग, मुंबई विद्यापीठ आणि ऋतायन यांच्या संयुक्त विद्यमाने शनिवार, 1 ऑक्टोबर 2022 रोजी आयोजित केलेल्या संस्कृत दिन समारोहात प्रमुख अतिथी या नात्याने ते बोलत होते. ते आपल्या भाषणात म्हणाले,”केवळ वेद-उपनिषदे, आर्ष महाकाव्ये, पुराणे, इतिहास, वेदांगे इतकेच नव्हे तर उपवेद, आयुर्वेद, वास्तुशास्त्र, अर्थशास्त्र, खगोलशास्त्र, गणित, नाट्यशास्त्र, कामशास्त्र आदि शास्त्रीय संहिता सुध्दा मूलत: संस्कृतातच लिहिल्या आहेत. भारताच्या समृध्द ज्ञानपरंपरेचे हे द्योतक आहे.”

विभागप्रमुख डॉ. शकुंतला गावडे यांनी उपस्थितांचे स्वागत करुन विभागाच्या वार्षिक अहवालाचे वाचन केले. पुढील शैक्षणिक वर्षापासून लागू केल्या जाणाऱ्या अभ्यासक्रमांची माहिती त्यांनी दिली. योगशास्त्र, अर्थशास्त्र, आर्ष महाकाव्ये व पुराणे, अभिजात संस्कृत साहित्य यांतील पदव्युत्तर अभ्यासक्रम तसेच भगवद्गीता पदविका हे अभ्यासक्रम पुढील शैक्षणिक वर्षापासून सुरु केले जातील असे त्या म्हणाल्या.  डॉ. माधवी नरसाळे यांनी प्रमुख पाहुण्यांची ओळख करुन दिली तर डॉ. सुचित्रा ताजणे यांनी आभारप्रदर्शन केले.

1 ऑक्टोबरचा हा कार्यक्रम म्हणजे 26 सप्टेंबरपासून सुरु असलेल्या संस्कृत सप्ताहाची सांगता होती. संस्कृत सप्ताहाच्या दरम्यान व्याख्यानमालेचे आयोजन केले होते. पद्मश्री पुरस्कार विजेते डॉ. अभिराज राजेन्द्र मिश्र यांनी आधुनिक संस्कृत साहित्यातील नवप्रवाहांचे विवेचन केले. जगन्नाथ संस्कृत विद्यापीठाचे माजी कुलगुरु डॉ. ब्रजकिशोर स्वाई यांनी संस्कारांच्या सामाजिक महत्त्वाविषयी उद्बोधन केले. भारतीय शैक्षणिक मंत्रालयाच्या शास्त्रीय व तांत्रिक परिभाषा आयोगाचे अध्यक्ष व जवाहरलाल नेहरु विद्यापीठाच्या संस्कृतकेंद्रामधील प्राध्यापक डॉ. गिरीश नाथ झा यांनी ’संस्कृत संगणकीय भाषाविज्ञानशास्त्रातील नवीन संशोधनपध्दती’ या विषयाचे विवेचन केले. कु. श्रुती कानिटकर हिने ’श्रीमतीचरित्रम्’ या तिच्या महाकाव्याचा प्रवास उलगडून दाखवला.

विभागाच्या विविध अभ्यासक्रमांतील विशेष प्रावीण्यप्राप्त विद्यार्थ्यांचा पारितोषिक वितरण समारंभ हा या कार्यक्रमाचा महत्त्वाचा भाग होता. विभागाची माजी विद्यार्थिनी  कु. श्रुती कानिटकर हिचा 2022 सालचा साहित्य अकादमीचा युवा पुरस्कार मिळाल्याबद्दल सत्कार करण्यात आला. विद्यार्थ्यांनी संस्कृतभाषेमधून एकपात्री प्रयोग, भरतनाट्यम् नृत्य तसेच गीतगायन अशा कार्यक्रमांचे सादरीकरण केले. संस्कृत पसायदानाने या कार्यक्रमाचा समारोप झाला.
