New vistas in Sanskrit studies

Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai explores new vistas in the studies of ancient language Sanskrit. Department aims to reveal ancient knowledge hidden in different shastras through its courses. Newly revised course of MA (Regular and weekend) offers ten electives for semester III which includes – Veda, Vedanta, Alamkara, Vyakarana, Dharmashastra-Arthashastra, Arsha Mahakavyas-Puranas, Indology, Modern Sanskrit Literature, Darshana Literature and Classical Sanskrit Literature. Semester IV offers inter disciplinary papers in Ancient Indian Arts, Ancient Indian Knowledge Systems, Indian Aesthetics, Narratology-theory and application, Yoga and Meditation. Department has designed skill based papers like Alamkaras and Vruttas, Creative writing, Translation studies and Zala Vedanta to improve abilities of students pertaining to language, research and analysis. Department aims to provide new areas of research for new generation of students.

Department offers different part time course for people passionate to learn Sanskrit language and allied subjects. People coming from all walks of life experience bliss in courses run on Saturdays after their strenuous week. Certificate, diploma and advanced diploma in Sanskrit are three courses offered for learning Sanskrit language and literature. P.G. Diploma Course in Comparative Mythology gives new perspective for understanding myths from comparative approach. Course in Mysticism explores the spiritual quest across different philosophical disciplines. Course in Bhakti creates awareness about bhakti literature and bhakti philosophy. Course in Manuscriptology educate students about ancient scripts which makes the student expert in the field. Manuscriptology is the area where there is dearth of researchers. Department has newly designed a certificate course in Prakrits considering the importance of all Prakrit languages along with Sanskrit. Dynamic faculty expert in above fields is ready to train students in Sanskrit language and fulfil the motto of the department –Sanskritam janaya.
